A Respectable Woman: Analysis and Exam Questions (NEB 12)

Build evidence-led answers on Mrs Baroda’s attraction, withdrawal, social identity and the ambiguous promise to be “very nice.”

Character evidenceIronyTimed answers

Desire enters a stable marriage

CharacterRole
Mrs BarodaRespectable married woman surprised by her own desire.
Gaston BarodaHer trusting husband and Gouvernail’s college friend.
GouvernailQuiet visitor whose reserve attracts Mrs Baroda.

Why does Mrs Baroda plan to dislike Gouvernail?

Gaston has spoken warmly of his college friend, yet Mrs Baroda has formed an image before meeting him. She expects a brilliant, socially forceful man and is frustrated by Gouvernail’s silence and lack of performance. Her irritation partly arises because he resists easy classification and does not supply the admiration or conversation she anticipates.

The night conversation changes the story

Outside, Gouvernail shares a quiet moment and recites lines associated with Walt Whitman. Mrs Baroda becomes physically and emotionally aware of him and wants to move closer. Chopin represents the impulse indirectly through sensation, silence and restraint. The scene matters because the conflict occurs within Mrs Baroda: Gouvernail does not openly seduce her.

Why does she leave the plantation?

Mrs Baroda recognizes a desire that clashes with her social identity and marriage. Rather than confess it to Gaston or test it with Gouvernail, she removes herself. Departure is both self-protection and control of circumstances. It does not prove the attraction was unreal; it proves she treats the impulse as consequential.

Outer conduct versus inner complexity

The title is partly ironic. Mrs Baroda remains respectable in conduct, yet her private desire contradicts the simplified ideal of a woman untouched by attraction outside marriage. Chopin exposes the distance between social role and interior life. Respectability may regulate behaviour, but it cannot make thought and desire perfectly obedient.

Passive guest or active influence?

Gouvernail is reserved, self-contained and apparently unaware of Mrs Baroda’s conflict. His quietness draws her because it differs from the social performance she expected. He functions less as a fully developed romantic pursuer than as a catalyst: his presence reveals a part of Mrs Baroda that her settled identity had not required her to confront.

Why is “very nice” ambiguous?

When Mrs Baroda welcomes a future visit and says she will be very nice to Gouvernail, Gaston hears hospitality. Readers remember the attraction. She may mean she has mastered herself, that she can now behave naturally, or that she intends to explore the attraction. Chopin refuses to settle the question, making readers test the reliability of social language.

Chopin’s psychological realism

  • Free indirect focus keeps readers near Mrs Baroda’s changing thought.
  • Understatement avoids explicit declaration of desire.
  • Contrast separates daylight hospitality from night intimacy.
  • Irony questions the label “respectable.”
  • Ambiguity makes the final sentence carry several intentions.

Expectation → trigger → response → ambiguity

  1. Name Mrs Baroda’s starting assumption.
  2. Identify Gouvernail’s reserve or the night conversation.
  3. Explain her physical, emotional and practical response.
  4. Use the ending to keep interpretation evidence-based and open.

8-minute ending analysis

1 min

State two readings.

2 min

Select earlier attraction and withdrawal.

4 min

Compare meanings of “very nice.”

1 min

Conclude without false certainty.

Weak claim → stronger analysis

  • Weak: She is unfaithful. Stronger: She experiences desire but controls conduct; intention remains unresolved.
  • Weak: Gouvernail tricks her. Stronger: His reserve catalyses a conflict he may not recognize.
  • Weak: The ending proves she is cured. Stronger: Her invitation supports self-mastery and renewed-interest readings.

Write an evidence-based ambiguous conclusion

The ending supports self-mastery because Mrs Baroda has created distance and later speaks calmly about Gouvernail’s return. Yet it also supports renewed attraction because her promise to be “very nice” echoes a desire known to the reader but not to Gaston. Neither reading can cancel the other. Chopin makes the husband’s innocent interpretation coexist with the reader’s suspicion, so the conclusion should identify the strongest reading while explaining why the story deliberately refuses proof of Mrs Baroda’s future action.

A Respectable Woman questions and answers

What distinction earns marks?

Separate private attraction from intention and completed action.

Why is Gouvernail difficult to read?

He is quiet and filtered mainly through Mrs Baroda’s changing perception.

What proves her self-control?

She removes herself from the situation instead of acting during the night encounter.

Is the title straightforward praise?

No. It is ironic because inner desire complicates the public label.

How many ending interpretations are defensible?

At least self-mastery, ordinary hospitality and renewed attraction are defensible with evidence.

How should I conclude an ambiguous answer?

State the strongest reading, acknowledge the alternative and explain why Chopin withholds certainty.
