Central reading

Build an evidence-led answer under exam conditions

Turn the prompt into a decision: circle its command word, underline its subject and state a one-sentence answer before selecting evidence. An effective answer makes a clear claim, gives a concrete example, considers an objection or limitation, and finishes with a reasoned judgement rather than calling technology simply good or bad.

Model analytical move

Digital learning can widen access to lessons, but unreliable connectivity and unequal devices can deepen an education gap. The best response links innovation with inclusion and responsible use.

  1. Answer the exact question in one arguable sentence.
  2. Choose two details that test the claim from different angles.
  3. Name a method only when you can explain its effect.
  4. Connect the example to context without replacing textual analysis.
  5. Add a qualification that prevents an absolute or simplistic conclusion.
  6. Finish by returning to the command word.

NEB answer method

Claim → context → evidence → interpretation → judgement

StageWhat to writeQuality check
ClaimA direct answer to the promptArguable, not a topic label
ContextOnly the background neededNo biography dump
EvidenceA precise event, image or language detailRelevant and accurate
InterpretationHow and why the detail mattersMethod linked to meaning
JudgementA qualified final insightReturns to the question

Independent practice

Move from retrieval to a timed response

  1. Write the central idea without looking at notes.
  2. Define the five key terms in your own words.
  3. Build three evidence-and-effect cards.
  4. Compare two possible interpretations.
  5. Write one 120-word analytical paragraph.
  6. Answer a long question under the time set by your teacher.
  7. Audit relevance, evidence, explanation and language accuracy.

Error repair

Replace summary with explanation

The most common weak pattern is event → event → opinion. Replace it with claim → evidence → effect → significance. Check names, sequence and context; then remove any sentence that does not help answer the prompt.

Create an error log with four columns: inaccurate recall, missing evidence, unexplained method and unclear language. Rewrite only the first weak decision, then retest with a new question after two days.

During editing, underline the sentence that answers the question and circle every piece of evidence. If a paragraph has no circle, add a precise detail; if it has evidence but no explanation, name the effect on character, reader, argument or theme. Read the final paragraph aloud to catch repetition and unclear reference.

Frequently asked questions

Science and Technology questions students ask

Science builds testable explanations from evidence, while technology applies knowledge through tools and systems. Their benefits and risks depend on design, access, ethics and use.

Use evidence, innovation, access, ethics, digital divide only when each term helps explain evidence. Define the idea through the passage instead of listing vocabulary.

Begin with a direct claim, establish the relevant context, analyse two precise details, explain their effect, consider a complication, and end by answering the exact wording of the question.

Plot summary or broad opinion without evidence. Select a short detail, explain how it works, and connect it back to the question instead of narrating everything that happens.

Use a one-page retrieval sheet: central idea, five terms, three evidence points, two likely questions and one paragraph written under time. Recheck after one day and one week.
