Corona Says: Analysis and Exam Questions (NEB 11)
Convert close reading into precise exam answers through a question bank, evidence planner, model reasoning, error repair and timed practice.
Five-minute diagnostic
Test interpretation before memorising an answer
- Name the speaker and intended audience.
- State the central warning in one sentence.
- Identify one contrast between human activity and nature.
- Explain the effect of giving Corona a voice.
- Write one qualified judgement about the poem’s message.
If an answer contains only pandemic history, a moral slogan or a list of devices, return to the prescribed text. The examiner needs a claim supported by literary evidence and explanation.
Question bank
Practise questions at increasing depth
| Level | Question | What it tests |
|---|---|---|
| Recall | Who speaks in the poem, and to whom? | Speaker and audience |
| Understanding | What warning does Corona give humanity? | Central idea |
| Analysis | How does personification reverse power? | Device and effect |
| Analysis | How does environmental contrast develop the argument? | Evidence and theme |
| Evaluation | Is the speaker mainly threatening, corrective or both? | Qualified judgement |
| Transfer | How can progress coexist with ecological responsibility? | Text-to-world reasoning |
Do not prepare one fixed paragraph for every question. Change the claim, evidence order and final judgement to match the command word: explain, analyse, compare or evaluate.
Evidence planner
Build a paragraph before writing it
Planning frame
Claim: Personification makes humanity answerable to a force it usually treats only as an object. Evidence: Select a moment where Corona directly addresses human conduct. Method: The speaking virus reverses observer and observed. Effect: Human control appears fragile. Significance: The reversal supports the call for humility and ecological responsibility.
This is a reasoning frame, not a quotation to memorise. Verify exact wording in the CDC textbook. A precise paraphrase is safer than an inaccurate quotation, but the best answer follows the evidence rules provided by the teacher or examination.
For environmental contrast, pair a description of intense human interference with the temporary pause in activity. Explain that the contrast reveals pressure on natural systems; do not claim that lockdown permanently repaired the environment.
Model reasoning
Answer how the device creates meaning
Question: How does personification strengthen the message of “Corona Says”?
Model paragraph: Personification strengthens the poem by allowing Corona to address humanity as a critic rather than remaining a silent medical phenomenon. This reversal places people in the position of listeners and weakens their assumption of complete control. When the speaker connects reduced human activity with visible relief in nature, the device turns an unusual crisis into an ethical challenge. Corona’s voice is therefore not only a threat; it also exposes environmental exploitation and urges a more responsible relationship with the non-human world.
The paragraph works because every sentence has a job: claim, device, effect, evidence-based theme and qualified judgement. It avoids biography, unsupported scientific claims and plot-like summary.
Long-answer method
Use a four-part response under time
- Introduction: answer the question and identify the speaker’s larger purpose.
- Paragraph one: analyse personification, direct address and reversal of authority.
- Paragraph two: analyse irony or the contrast between human activity and environmental pause.
- Conclusion: judge the warning carefully and connect it to responsibility without turning the answer into a general speech.
Allow two minutes to plan, most of the time to write, and the final two minutes to check title, relevance, paragraphing and language. Underline the command word before starting.
Error repair
Correct the first weak decision
- “The poem is about coronavirus.” Make the claim specific: human pride, environmental exploitation or responsibility.
- “Personification is used.” Explain the reversal and its effect on the reader.
- “Nature became perfect.” Use qualified language about temporary environmental relief.
- “The poet says…” Distinguish the constructed speaker from the author unless the question asks about authorship.
- Long quotation. Choose a precise detail and spend more words interpreting it.
Keep an error log with four labels: relevance, evidence, explanation and expression. Rewrite the faulty sentence, then answer a related question after two days without looking at the correction.
Frequently asked questions
Corona Says exam questions answered
Answer the exact question with an arguable claim and identify the relevant speaker, theme or device. Do not begin with a broad definition of poetry.
Personification, direct address, irony and contrast are useful when tied to a precise detail and an explained effect.
Use only the context needed to clarify the poem. Historical narration should not replace close reading of voice, language and structure.
Follow the teacher’s evidence rules. If quoting, verify the prescribed text exactly; an accurate precise reference is better than an invented quotation.
After every detail, explain how it shapes tone, power, reader response or theme, and then connect that effect back to the question.
