The Bandipur fact grid

PromptPrecise recall
Why travel?Old classmates are tired of Kathmandu’s hectic, monotonous routine.
Where is the turn? The uphill road branches from Prithvi Rajmarg near Dumre.
Alternative route?A steep climb of more than two hours from Dumre.
First impression?A cool, cobbled Newar settlement where “old Nepal” seems alive.
Earlier political setting? The Magar kingdom of Tanahun, linked with Palpa/Tansen.
Commercial rise?Newar traders and the Nepal–Tibet trade route strengthened the town.
Commercial decline? The Prithvi Highway bypassed the ridge town below.
Later possibility?Preservation and tourism gave heritage buildings renewed value.

Claim → detail → interpretation → link

  1. Claim: give the answer in the first sentence.
  2. Detail: use one exact fact or brief phrase from the passage.
  3. Interpretation: explain the detail rather than repeating it.
  4. Link: reconnect to leisure, heritage, change or the question wording.

Model: “Bandipur feels like a journey into the past because its physical environment preserves visible history. The narrator notices a cool, cobbled Newar settlement after leaving noisy Kathmandu. This contrast changes the travellers’ sense of pace and makes the short journey feel like movement across a century.”

Six likely questions with answer points

QuestionWhat a strong answer must include
Why was the trip delayed? The group had heard about Bandipur but postponed setting out; the eventual weekend trip breaks inertia and routine.
Why take the bus? They had limited time, so they rejected the more adventurous steep climb.
What does “time stops” mean?A figurative response to preserved architecture, slower pace and living heritage—not literal stopped time.
How did Bandipur prosper?Newar trading settlement plus a strategic position on a regional trade route.
How did transport alter the town? The bypass shifted movement and commerce away, reducing its old market role.
Why can tourism help?Visitors create demand for local services and adaptive reuse, provided heritage and residents are respected.

Was the highway bypass only harmful?

A balanced response should avoid a simple yes. The bypass reduced Bandipur’s commercial importance because travellers and goods no longer passed through the bazaar. Families lost opportunities tied to the old route. Yet reduced pressure also helped protect streets and buildings that might otherwise have been replaced rapidly. Later, preserved heritage became valuable for tourism. Therefore the bypass produced economic loss first, but its unintended preservation effect supported a different form of revival.

Can tourism preserve and damage heritage?

Yes. Tourism can finance inns, guiding, crafts, food businesses and repair of old structures. It can also bring noise, waste, crowding, rising prices and superficial performances of culture. The Nepal Tourism Board presents Bandipur’s Newar architecture, shrines, caves, festivals, hill culture and hiking as major attractions. An exam answer should argue that community control, visitor limits where necessary, respectful photography, local employment and conservation rules decide whether tourism becomes protection or pressure.

Use the word, not only its definition

  • hectic: Kathmandu’s hectic pace motivates the escape.
  • monotonous: A monotonous routine lacks refreshing variety.
  • set out: The classmates set out after repeated delay.
  • branched off: Their road branched off near Dumre.
  • bypassed: The highway bypassed the old hill market.
  • restoration: Restoration protects fabric and cultural meaning.

For a context question, first identify how the word functions in the sentence, then give a meaning that fits that exact situation.

Chart description without invented causes

Use three sentences: overall trend, exact comparison, cautious limitation. Example: “Outdoor recreation was the most common leisure choice, while creative activities were least common. Screen entertainment was twice as frequent as volunteering. The chart records preference but does not show whether cost, access or free time caused the pattern.”

Overview → comparison → limitation

Useful language: accounted for, exceeded, was slightly lower than, twice as many, whereas. Never call a small difference “dramatic,” and do not convert percentages into numbers of people unless the sample size is given.

Why students need purposeful leisure

Topic sentence: Purposeful leisure strengthens study because recovery is part of sustained attention. Support: Active recreation adds movement, creative hobbies develop concentration, and social activities build belonging. Qualification: However, an unplanned screen break can expand until it replaces sleep or revision. Application: Students should set a start time, choose an activity and decide when to return. Conclusion: Leisure is most useful when it refreshes rather than controls the student.

Purdue OWL advises using transitions to make the logic between ideas visible. Choose a connector for the relationship: for example for evidence, however for contrast and therefore for result.
